James is a classical NZ 9 who has spent the last 4 years learning his craft under the guidance of one of our greatest ever 9’s – Aaron Smith.  James has moulded his game on Aaron’s style and prides himself on the speed of his pass, accurate box kicking, and superior fitness levels. James is also good in the tackle and never shy’s away from the contact required for a top 9. James made his debut for Otago back in 2018 and has been a regular feature for them over the years. He has nailed the starting 9 position there in 2023/24 and showed his all round quality and leadership in guiding Otago around the park. His communication is great, and having studied French throughout his University years, he is an effective communicator in this language. A great team man who understands culture and the value of a ‘team first’ attitude, James would be a great addition to any side looking for a Super Rugby level halfback, and one who still has a lot of potential and growth left in his game.
